Olympic Torch comes to Oxford

posted 2 Jul 2012, 04:03 by Matthew Key
On Monday 9th July, the Olympic Torch will be coming to Oxford. Resting at South Park on Monday evening, there will be a huge (20,000 person+) celebration for all the city, featuring dance, music, comedy - and our very own Love Oxford presentation, including gospel choirs and a testimony from Christian ParaOlympic champions.
As well as all the celebrations surrounding the Torch, there is another project sweeping our nation - the UK Prayer Baton. Organised by More Than Gold, this baton is travelling ahead of the torch to each evening location on the 70 day Olympic flame journey. Gathering churches and ministries together to pray, the Prayer Baton is an opportunity for Christians to bless our nation in prayer during the preparations for the Olympics.
On Monday 9th July, at 12noon, we are delighted that the prayer baton will be coming to the Oxford Prayer Room for a short service of prayer and blessing. The baton will be travelling with a team from Cambridge - making a historic opportunity for these two University cities to unite together in prayer for our nation. On the Tuesday, Oxford will then be taking the baton to Reading, as it continues its journey of blessing until it's final destination point in London.
If you'd like to come along to the service, please email matthew.key@staldates.org.uk to book a place, as sadly - with people travelling from many different cities to participate in the service - space will be limited. And, if you are unable to come, please do pray for this time of blessing as the Prayer Baton travels through Oxford, and pray too for the Love Oxford event happening in the evening!
